Clothes have been worn ever since an early hunter shivered in the cold. He looked enviously at the wild boar he was chasing and thought, "I want that coat."
Throughout history, people in the same area have tended to dress the same way. But local leaders wanted to stand out in a crowd.
Native American chiefs were the men wearing the most feathers.
Viking chiefs had the biggest armlets.
Successful leaders had money and power-and they wore extravagant outfits to prove it. They were the fashion setters of their times.
As for ordinary people, they just admired from a distance.
